In loving memory of my beloved brother, Deolall Motilall
As if nothing more worse can happen in this annus horribilis of 2020, you left us with weeping hearts and our kindred spirits grieve. There’s no other love like the love for a brother and in all our sorrow and dismay, no stronger tie that binds us all together.
As our big brother and beloved son, we spent 26 years of your life together in our homeland and will cherish forever our childhood memories through the years and grown-up dreams we shared, as you walked through this world with us.
We learned at an early age that we had to live our lives by a certain moral compass and that our shared beliefs and values were predicated on acts of kindness, honesty, compassion, forgiveness, and respect for each other in the community in which we lived. We were taught to be a humanist long before our religious conditioning. You have lived up to every one of those ideals.
You never fought in a war or served in the army, but you are the bravest soldier I’ve ever met. You went to work at a tender age to help the household and you made sacrifices for your three sisters and brother. You continued to make sacrifices for your own family and became a role model for Astra, Ashley, and Allan. They have looked up to you for a long time.
From the onset of your diagnosis, you faced numerous challenges and made heroic efforts to beat this disease called sarcoidosis. But like a windstorm that swept down on the lake, the raging waves drifted the boat from shore, and all alone we cry. We’ll miss your quiet and humble ways.
But always, dear brother, when I look to the heavens above
I will remember you
I’ll think of you where the streets are paved with gold
And hope you’ll be smiling down at me
For you, I’ll try to turn the tide
Wishing you were here to see me through
But now that I must live without you
I thank the Lord
That you walked through this world with me
I am forever proud to be your big sister. Until we meet again.
NOTE:
If you’d like to help find a cure for sarcoidosis, please consider making a donation to the University of Ottawa, Heart Institute.
