So sorry to hear the sad news of Mark's passing. I was fortunate enough to meet Mark at Petrie island rowing one day, he asked me for some help with his rowing. Over the years we saw each other in the Summers exchanging rowing advice and banter, although I did not know him intimately, I was drawn to his kindness, in Aussie terms he was just "a great bloke", the world needs more people like Mark. Deepest condolences are extended to the family.

I knew Mark from high school, but got to know him much better in university because we both lived in New College residience at U of T. Coincidentally we both moved to Ottawa after U of T and he later worked with my wife at Newbridge. I will never forget having an argument with Mark on the TTC and him convincing me that nuclear disarmament was the right thing. He had a brilliant mind and a deep knowledge of many things. It was a life changing moment for me and made me realize that I needed to pay more attention to current events and get more information about things before forming an opinion. I attended my first peace rally as a result of that discussion and it has lead me to a better understanding of the world. Although I had not seen him in several years, I still have many fond memories of my time with him in Brockville, Toronto and Ottawa.
To Anne, Celeste, Anais, Isabelle and Lucinda, my thoughts are with you at this time.
I found the attached picture of Mark looking thoughtful on a ski trip to Owls Head in the 1980's.

Tribute to Mark
Since moving to PEC in late 2015, our family circle has been richly blessed with the warm welcome and strong love that Mark and his family have shown to us at every possible family occasion……….Birthdays, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, Canadian citizenship, recitals, church concerts, our house blessing, funerals and annual traditional picnics at Jones Falls. We have enjoyed sharing many of Mark’s interests, especially music. On every occasion spent together, “haus musik” was always a shared pleasure. Our sincere gratitude goes to Anne, Celeste, Anais and Isabelle for always including us and we extend our deepest condolences to each of you at this time of loss. We will always miss him too. We know that Mark would want us all to remember him with joy and to smile again.

I am very saddened to hear that Mark has passed away. He was my closest friend growing up on Fairway Crescent in Brockville. I will always cherish the time we spent building forts and model trains, looking at the stars, cross country skiing, riding our bikes and exploring the great outdoors. Mark was like an encyclopedia always armed with interesting facts and full of curiosity. He was able to help our high school "Reach for the Top" (TV quiz show) team win 2nd place in the national finals. He photographed, edited and developed many of the photos in our BCI high school year book. He also had a keen interest in the arts, performing in musicals, and playing saxophone the band. Mark was an adventurer who at an early age traveled Europe and Hawaii and then on to New Zealand for a work term (earlier this year he was able to give us a lot of travel tips before and while we were in New Zealand). A few years ago Mark and I had a lot of fun on a trip to Arizona and the intellectual discussions were a refreshing reminder of his keen mind. Mark will be remembered and missed always.

Thank you, Richard, for reminding me of the great times you and Mark had on Fairway Crescent. You two were always off in the woods exploring and talking. I hope we can get together soon to reminisce together.

You obviously know the same Mark I did. When I, Mark's second cousin, moved to Ottawa from Saskatchewan in 1965, I was in my early '20s. I was welcomed with open arms by Mark's family. Whenever I came to Brockville, I visited Mark's mother--and since Mark was a preschooler, at home with his mom, I got to know to know him very well. At age 12, he burst in from school one day, saw me and insisted we listen to "Jesus Christ Superstar!" Lively discussion followed. Incredibly gentle guy. Miss him.

Dear Anne, Céleste, Anaïs and Isabelle,
We are so sorry for the loss of your beloved husband and father,
It has been our privilege to have known Mark, our dear friend. Mark loved life. He was surrounded with the love of his family, his music and his curiosity of everything around him. Mark was courageous in his fight against cancer, always hopeful that a cure would be found in order to have more time. His life was never long enough, for those of us he left behind, who loved him dearly.
Please accept our profound sympathy.
