I’m so sorry for your loss Michael. I was reminiscing with someone about the days Jackie and I worked on Carling Avenue and the laughs we had and thought to see if she was on any of the socials I’m on and I found this notice of her passing. I’m sorry we lost touch, she really was such fun and a riot to work with. In those days DJ was the only grandchild. I’m sure he’s grown into a wonderful young man and has made you both proud. I’m sure you’re all missing her. I’ll always have the fondest memories of “Jacka”. Blessings to you and your family. Liisa

Eulogy
Jackie has been my life partner for over 50 years. Our 50th wedding anniversary would have occurred on D Day next year.
We both come from working class families and we began our lives together in the late 1960’s. I was an Able Seaman in the Navy and Jackie a machinist in a factory making raincoats. We met for the first time at Reading railway station in 1969 following a distant pen pal relationship over the previous year. Jackie often commented that as I pulled off my motorcycle helmet, she knew I was a “keeper”. So, our live together began.
Jackie started working at the age of 13; working weekends at Woolworths department store. On leaving school at 15 she became a machinist at Burbery’s. She lived with her parents in a two up-two-down unit on social housing estate just out side Reading.
Life was not easy. We started our honeymoon with just 34 UK pounds (less than $100) between us as we boarded a train from Reading to Portsmouth. Simon our first child followed, and with-it Jackie started the never-ending cycle of repeatedly moving house with each change of military posting.
Home was a wide variety of locations for Jackie in England and Scotland along with long periods in Gibraltar and San Diego.
Soon after my entry into Naval College we were blessed with the arrival of Mark our second son. As we transited from the working level ranks into the officer core Jackie took the transition stoically never acquiring any measure of advantage or superiority; always maintaining her humbleness, simply honesty and caring outlook. Jackie did a wide range of jobs including bar maid, merchandizer, checkout cashier, personal support worker, fish seller and a fish fryer. Her pleasures were simple: Coronation Street, wrestling and horror movies.
Our two boys, Simon and Mark, were the center of her life, she devotedly doted on them. Her heart was completely broken when the boys went to boarding school leaving a scar on her heart that never really healed.
Eventually military appointments led us to Halifax Nova Scotia. Jackie and I loved the Canadian experience so just one year after the appointment ended we all arrived in Ottawa as landed immigrants.
Jackie’s passing has closed a 29 year chapter of our lives here in Ottawa.
25 of those 29 years have been centered on our house out in Cumberland on the Ottawa River. Jackie just by chance caught the house being advertised on a commercial real estate channel in 1994 and so we decided that was where we were to live and retire. Early on in our time in the house on the river Jackie had young children in her life again, this time grandchildren following Simon’s wedding with Julie. Being directly involved in David-Jame’s and Benjamin’s upbringing filled Jackie with joy and happiness almost beyond measure. Christmases were so special in those years as the two grandsons grew up. Jackie’s outward glow and pride as she took David-James and Benjanin on outings was palatable.
Jackie found her true vocation in Canada that of being a Personal Service Worker coordinator. Her natural friendliness and concern for others matched this vocation exactly. Post this work Jackie had a number of Christmases running a stall in the Orleans shopping centre. Lorraine joined Jackie in this role resulting in much laughter and fun as they stumbled through the paperwork and cashing-up together.
Although Simon stayed in Canada Mark eventually took off for new adventures in Australia and Kenya. Then just as David James and Benjamin entered manhood Jackie was blessed with a third grandson, Michael, born in Kenya. The absolute joy and happiness that Jackie extruded as she met and held Michael for the first time at the airport in Kenya was one of the most endearing memories I will have of Jackie. Her heart was just bursting with happiness. Mathew followed as the fourth grandchild. We managed to visit Kenya three times to see our new grandchildren. Jackie so loved them and so wanted to see them again.
As Jackie’s health and mobility declined, she endured many hardships and indignities. Throughout all this she remained stoic, a real trooper, showing dignity and grace. A true English girl.
I was with Jackie as she left us near midnight just a week ago today. Yes we had many dreams and adventures unfilled. Regardless Jackie was thankful, happy and proud with what she had experienced and achieved. It was life well led. It was a life well enjoyed. It was a life with much happiness and joy. Now free from all the earthly aliments Jackie is looking down, beaming in pride at her legacy of two sons and four grandchildren.
Goodbye darling. Thank you for our 50 wonderful years, please watch over us all as we all start a new year and a new chapter tomorrow …….

best memories are of family times over Christmas when you were in the UK. And the fun times we had in the spring water glens in Scotland. What fun they were I can still picture Jackie now collecting the spring water and the resulting splash !

I worked with Jackie for quite a few yrs at OHHS and must say she was an absolute joy to know!We shared the same wicked sense of humour and would always try to zing each other with outrageous scenarios. She made going to work a joy and her Kindness and humour was great for stress relief! She truly was one in a million and will be missed
by all who knew her. So saddened to learn of her passing.
