My sincere condolences to Amy and all the family. It was my good fortune to be a fellow student with George at United Theological College. George was ordained the year before me. I always enjoyed his gentle presence and benefited from his wise counsel. A number of years ago, when I was minister at City View United, I was asked to officiate at a wedding and if I could say a few words in Japanese. I approached George to see if he could teach me some Japanese and, of course, he said that he would. It was so wonderful on that occasion to renew our acquaintance and to share a cup of tea. At the wedding, the families were so appreciative that I had learned some Japanese and even said my pronunciation was not bad. George was one of the most gentle and caring persons I have ever met and a wonderful minister. We will all miss him.

I met Reverend Tomita more than 40 years ago, when daughter Pam and I were roommates at Carleton University (Journalism). While we have not seen each other in years, Pam and her family are in my heart and prayers always. To Pam and the Tomita family: Please accept this modest expression of my deepest sympathy. May the warmth of friendship and the protection of our angels soften the pain of Reverend Tomita's passing. May your belief in our Lord provide peace and comfort. Lydia Boyko

We were one of the very fortunate couples to be married by Reverand Tomita in 1983. We became one of the 900 calls in his phone ministry that Reverand Tomita made every year to commemorate an anniversary and remember birthdays. During our 33 years of marriage, we have yet to run into anyone else that could say the same about their minister. It was not only phone calls, but hand written notes that he would send, usually with Mrs. Tomita's flowers from her garden gracing the front of the card. In the past few years, we called Reverand Tomita at the retirement home. He was always in good spirits, optimistic about his health care and letting us know that he and Mrs. Tomita were doing well. A big thank you to their daughter, Pam, who took over the newsletters and gave us regular updates on Reverand and Mrs. Tomita. Our condolences to Mrs. Tomita, and the entire Tomita family. We are sure that there is now another star in the sky shining bright and watching over all of you. Thinking of you all. Gord and Deb (Kobayashi) Willmot

When Rev George Tomita first arrived in Toronto in 1979 as minister of the Toronto Japanese United Church Nisei Congregation, one of his first duties was to call a meeting of the church board. One of the first items of business was to discuss the situation of the Vietnamese board people and the life threatening dangers that they were in. George challenged the board to do something and the result was that we decided to sponsor a Vietnamese family by applying to the federal government for a privately sponsored family under the umbrella of the United Church of Canada. Our family arrived on November 29, 1979. Four teenaged boys had witnessed terrible acts by sea pirates against refugee families. We welcomed the boys. Even though the hard effort of our volunteers were time consuming, our sponsorship became friendship. The boys and their families have become hard-working members of Canadian society and we meet with them once a year to rekindle our friendship. It was one of the best experiences that I have been involved with in my life and George started it almost four decades ago. His legacy lasts.
