I also worked in the culture section at Statscan with Fidel in the early 2000s. It is with sadness that I have just learned of his passing. He was a great person, always in a good moon, smiling and it was very pleasant to work with him. Rest in peace my dear friend.

My Ironman: When my wife and I visited you in the hospital and had a long conversation about life and everything, I had no inkling that this was going to be, yet it is now. I miss you, Ironman. I miss all the jokes we shared, your hearty and unpretentious laughter that infects anyone around you, the sagely insight that you brought into discussions, be they intellectual or mundane. Ironman, I am going to miss your company and you calling me lionkiller. Ironman, I will probably miss you for the balance of my own life, for yours was genuine indeed, to yourself, but especially to all those who knew you and crossed paths with you. Ironman, Ironman, Ironman!!! It is well. It is well with your soul.

I was fortunate enough to have had Fidel as a colleague for many years at Statistics Canada. I have met few people who enjoyed life as much as Fidel. His enthusiasm for everything, family, work, sports and a myriad of other things was contagious and brightened many a dull or difficult day. I adored him for his smile, his easy open manner and his positive acceptance of everyone and everything. He touched many lives in a sincerely warm and caring way, as these guestbook writings attest. Thank you Fidel. You will be remembered. May you rest in peace.

We are so saddened to hear about the passing of Fidelis. Words cannot express how traumatizing the news was. We consider Fidelis a family friend. Our fondest memories were those spent during get together at our home; and those events will never be the same without him. We understand that we are sojourners in this world, but saying goodbye is never easy. As you journey home for eternal life, may you be seated with the angels, may eternal peace be onto you. Amen. To Stella and children, we pray that the almighty Lord will give you the strength to cope. May you find peace, knowing that you were loved by Fidelis!

Fidel had an office beside me for a number of years and I couldn't have asked for a better neighbor, colleague or work friend. He had an easy laugh, kind smile and was a true gentleman. He spoke of his children and wife with great love. Sometimes we spoke about stocks, me on the losing end while he played it safe with bank stocks. A few times we spoke about Nigeria and he informed me about the politics there. I have only fond memories of Fidel. A wonderful man has left this world for another kind, gentle place. Safe journey friend.
