I am very sorry to learn of the passing of Dr. Jean Gérin-Lajoie. I first met Jean when he was a resident under the mentorship of my good friend and colleague, Dr. Guy Laframboise. I worked alongside Jean for many years at the former Riverside Hospital of Ottawa. Jean eventually moved on to new opportunities, but I am fortunate to have reconnected with him when he moved to our community and became a neighbor.
I wish to convey my deepest sympathies to Thérèse, Caroline, and family.

Very very Saddened to read this. I will forever remember spending time at The Ottawa Hospital, he would always buy me lunch and he was the only surgeon that would sit and eat with the nurses. As a young surgeon, he will forever be one of my role models. I wouldn't be who I am without his guidance.

Que c’est triste! Tu es partie trop vite et trop jeune Jean! Quelle chance que j’ai eue de te connaître et quels merveilleux souvenirs je garde de travailler à tes côtés lorsque j’étais orthophoniste à l’Hôpital Général d’Ottawa. Je me souviens quand on avait fait les nouvelles – le premier chirurgien à faire la technique Blom-Singer pour personnes laryngectomisées au Canada. Et ensuite, nos nombreux soupers gourmets, où Luc et moi avons passé de nombreuses soirées arrosés en compagnie de cette merveilleuse Thérèse et toi. Merci pour tout. Merci pour les belles conversations et pour ta sagesse. J’ai appris beaucoup de toi - tant au niveau professionnel qu'au niveau personnel. Tu avais raison: la famille prime avant tout, et les biens matériaux ne font pas le bonheur. Bon voyage Jean. Thérèse, Caroline et ta famille, j’ai une pensée toute spéciale pour vous aujourd'hui. Rest In Peace Dr. Jean Gérin-Lajoie. Sadly, yesterday I found out that my favourite mentor during ENT residency in Ottawa passed away. Dr. Gérin-Lajoie was a great teacher, mentor, role model and friend. He is one of the most influential people in my life and was critical in my development both professionally and personally. He was a true gentleman who touched the lives of many and I can only hope that I can be a fraction of the man he was. When I told Adele the news, she cried and could not feel a deep loss. She only had a handful of interactions with him many years ago, but he had a powerful impact on her. That was the type of person he was. Back then, when others turned their back on me, he was one of the only people who had my back and supported me. He was known to buy all the residents lunch every time they worked with him. He trusted us to operate independently on his patients, something that was critical in our development as surgeons. One time, he even offered to help me move a piano that I had recently bought. Such an amazing and generous person. He was one of a kind and I will never forget him. It has been a long time since we last spoke and I wish I could have had one more moment with him laughing and joking about life. He will be sorely missed by all whose lives he touched.

Today, Truley is a sad day. I could not resist crying for our beloved BOSS Dr.Jean G-L. I loved him so much. He was indeed a True Human, a great Teacher. So, many times he bought me lunch..!! Words cannot express how truly saddened I am to hear of Jean’s passing. As the ENT nurse lead in the operating room for many years I can say that he was one of the best surgeons I ever had the privilege of working along side. Over the many years we worked together we developed a friendship that continued even after his retirement. He was so genuine, kind, patient and had the biggest smile and a personality to match. A true gentleman and family man. He was a special person to so many people but his wife, daughter and grandkids meant everything to him. In a recent email he told me the most difficult part of living in lockdown was not being able to hug his grandkids. He will be greatly missed. Deepest sympathies to his entire family.
